Promoting Safe Listening Practices

San Fernando, CA — Califone and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) continued their messaging advocating for the safe use of personal audio technology in classrooms.Representatives from the two organizations met at the just concluded NECC conference to discuss how to reach educators and students to integrate safe listening practices. ASHA recently found that 40 percent of students reported they set their music players’ volume too loud, or above 85 decibels, which is a level hearing experts recommend not be exceeded.

Califone announced this spring its support to promote “America: Tuned In Today . . But Tuned Out Tomorrow?” an ASHA public education campaign with a safe listening message about using personal audio technology.

For its part, Califone is recommending teachers and students integrate the following practices: lower the volume, limit listening time and upgrade to headphones offering on-ear or over-ear ambient noise-reducing earcups.

For more information about the campaign, visit www.listentoyourbuds.org, an online resource for students, parents and educators to inform them about the potential long-term effects of using personal audio devices improperly. Stakeholders are also encouraged to ask their own in-school speech-and-language professional for more information.
