Saving Your Voice

13th in a series about portable PA gear, how to decipher all those buttons, and how to operate them.

Many of the previous articles in this series have talked about voice or music amplification for larger crowds (greater than one hundred people as an approximate starting point). But have you ever been speaking to a smaller audience and it would still be better if your voice could have been a little louder? Or what if you had a sore throat and couldn’t even talk up to a conversational level, let alone to a group of people? If you are a teacher, seminar leader, trainer, or a presenter, your answer might be “yes” to either of these two questions. Many of us have gotten by at one point or another by simply “talking through it” and later feeling the strain or soreness in our vocal cords. If talking to a group of people is your livelyhood, you can’t sustain this approach for a long period of time. There is a simpler solution!

The VoiceSaver™ series offers two different hip-worn models: the 5 Watt PA-285 and the 2 Watt PA-282. Which is the right one for you? Let’s talk about the differences between the two to help you determine which one better is better suited to your needs.

Both VoiceSavers offer hands-free mobility for extended classes and presentations (PA-285 shown left and the PA-282 shown right).

Besides the wattage difference, the PA-285 is a little bigger (4.6”W x 1.8”D x 6.3”H vs. 4.5”W x 1.5”D x 3.5”H), but we’re only talking about something roughly the size of your hand (with the fingers together). It’s also slightly heaver (19 vs 10 oz.), but either can be comfortably worn on a belt. The 5 Watt model ensures you will be heard in a group of up to 50 people, where the 2 Watt model is ideal for addressing groups of 25. The PA-285 also has a threaded and recessed tripod mount underneath, enabling you to elevate the PA for its sound to better reach your audience. The PA-285 also has a 3.5mm aux-in to connect and amplify sounds from an LCD projector, MP3 player, or a computer for multimedia presentations.

Both VoiceSaver models come with a headset microphone for hands-free flexibility.
