Teaching How Loud is Too Loud

Audiologists are in agreement that one of the most critical issues facing students is listening to personal audio devices at a volume level that exceeds the 85db limit recommended by ASHA and OSHA. But how can you teach what an appropriate level of volume is?

One long term solution is to educate younger students about the issue to modify their behavior. But until they can recognize for themselves just how loud too loud is, the Sound Alert series (headphone and jackbox) can assist teachers with the critical audio-related classroom activities which are so integral to beginning readers and language learning. When the volume exceeds 85db, a bright red LED turns on to visibly alert those nearby that the sound is too loud and should be turned down. Since the internal circuitry requires power to drive the warning signal, the headphone needs to be charged.

Each 2985PG includes its own AC adapter and charging lead. After plugging the adapter into the wall and the other end into the charging lead, plug one of the 8 connectors on the charging lead into the headphone (on the underside of one of the ambient noise-reducing earcups) for four hours to charge the battery. The second light on the earcup will appear as orange while the battery is recharging and then turns green when fully recharged. The headphone can then be unplugged and used for up to thirty-six hours on a single charge, or approximately five-hundred hours in standby mode. The headphone saves power by shutting off when no audio signal is present for 60 seconds and will power on automatically when there is an audio signal present. The headphone will function as a normal headphone even when the battery is depleted, except the warning system will not operate.

The Sound Alert jackbox (1285G) needs to be plugged in in order for the warning system to function since it does not have an internal battery.  A Sound Alert Listening Center is also available and includes the 1285G jackbox, eight 2924AVG headphones, and a rugged storage case.
