Freeze

7th in a series of articles.

Have you ever wished you had special powers to freeze important moments in class, capture and file them for future access?

While we wish we could formally bestow super hero status to teachers, at least the , the Freeze Frame feature of the Diggiditto Document Camera does enable you to capture a moving image for later editing or comparing purposes across a variety of subject applications. It take a snapshot of any moving objects, you can then use the Pen Palette to edit the image with writings, figures, colors, and save the file for future reference or printing. To activate or release Freeze Frame, simply select the Camera Mode, then click on the Freeze/Release Frame icon when you want to capture whatever is in the eye of the lens. The following are a couple of ideas for using the Freeze Frame feature, but there are lots of others just waiting to be imagined… :

• Observe live subjects in Science experiments – Whether you’re observing insect or small animal movements, the Freeze Frame feature enables you to take and save as many snapshots as you need to record for students to later study and observe. One great advantage of this feature in Science applications is that the entire class could view and study the frozen frame image while the actual subject is being passed around for students to touch and feel.
• Create ePortfolios for each student – The Freeze Frame feature could be used as a typical digital camera to take snapshots of individual student’s show & tell, singing performance, puppet shows, or dancing practice. Best of all, you don’t need to spend time and effort to organize all the images. Just save the files within each student’s respective name folder under different subject/class titles. At back-to-school night or open house, you’ll have each student’s “ePortfolios” ready to present to their parents!
• Introducing important concepts in Physics class – You can freeze several frames while dropping a small rock to the ground. With the snapshots of the rock at different heights, teach students the relationship of speed, gravity, and distance.
• Conduct self-checked practice quizzes – With the Freeze Frame feature, you can help students conduct self-checked practice quizzes with any curriculum subjects. Just display the sheet with quiz questions underneath Diggiditto, activate Freeze Frame, and request students to write out their answers on their notebook as you answer it on the sheet. Once you are done, ask students to stop then click the Freeze/Release Frame icon again to show the live image of your answers for students to check and compare. This is a convenient method to check students’ understanding at anytime without advanced preparations and in-class paper distributions.

Now you know you have the power to freeze the critical moments and even save a record of it. Be creative to preserve significant elements and lead your students to success!

Read the previous article about using Diggiditto as a web cam and for calls using Skype, or return to the first in the series.
