Virtual Learning Contest
Imagine yourself collaborating with a colleague from another country for an upcoming presentation at an educational technology conference. Now imagine doing so face to face or picture your student’s enthusiasm if they were to have a virtual guest speaker or a connection with students in a far away classroom.
Sound like something you’d want to try? With the Califone USB webcam you can engage your students in the world of virtual learning with…well, the world through online video chats or you can find other teachers through Skype in the Classroom.
As more schools expand learning beyond their classroom’s walls, we want to hear your thoughts on how this new channel will help you or your students. Post your ideas on our Facebook page (califoneinternational) for your chance to win some of the one-hundred webcams we’re giving away! The top ten ideas posted will each win ten USB webcams. Maximum of 5 ideas per entrant. If two ideas are similar and one wins, then the first one posted will receive the prize.
Posts must be made onto the Califone fan page before midnight May 31st, 2001.

I am a recent teaching graduate and was able to see Skype’s application in the classroom. One way I would use it would be classroom collaboration – I would find Skype buddy classes in other parts of the country and US military base schools around the world when studying second grade social studies, specifically cultural differences and similarities.
Additionally, my second grade studies the Harlem Renaissance for Black History Month. I would love to find a Harlem elementary school to Skype with, so students could gain context of what exactly “Harlem” is and the ways in which children living in both regions are the same.

A webcam and Skype would allow my students the opportunity to connect to loved ones overseas and abroad. For example, aamily members in the military would be able attend school perfomances and celebrations.
