Poll On New Headset Requirements

Califone has opened an online poll about an upcoming Common Core-related headset requirement. PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) announced plans to elevate the role of audio in its testing for the 2016-17 season.

Microphones will be required in 2016-2017 for the [PARCC] Speaking and Listening testing session.

PARCC’s Technology Guideline V4.1 guideline (May 2014) states “Headphones/earphones/ear buds are only required for English Language Arts/Literacy testing sessions, not mathematics testing sessions (except for students who need them for accommodations such as text to speech).” The change in the test’s audio application is then stated, “Microphones will be required in 2016-2017 for the Speaking and Listening testing session.”

This shift from passive listening to active response (with a microphone) means schools and districts need to begin preparation with a different type of hardware than many are currently using. This is especially true if mobile devices (including but not limited to  iPads and Chromebooks) will be used since some currently offer only a single 3.5mm port to connect a headphone and a microphone. Califone refers to a headphone as a device with earcups only so it’s used for just listening. By comparison, a headset is a headphone with an attached boom microphone.  So the important question asks, “Is my school or district taking the necessary steps to meet PARCC’s new headset requirements?”. Vote today and see what other educators are saying on the matter.

Califone offers headphones and headsets that work with the three major operating systems – Windows, iOS, and Android platforms. With the use of notebooks, laptops, and netbooks in classrooms, having different connection options is essential. One frequent consideration when buying headsets is being sure that certain plugs match the intended devices.
