The Music Maker™ multimedia players and learning centers provide flexibility and durability for read-alongs, individual or small group instruction as well as amplified audio for an entire class of up to 75 people. Whether used for sustained silent reading or phonics activities, the Music Maker supports music and movement activities, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, literacy groups, ELL, ELD and other language learning programs.
There are three models in the Music Maker series. The MP3-Capable Music Maker is a single cassette multimedia player which can play CDs with MP3 files or audio files duplicated from original content which have been converted from wma or wav formatted files. The Music Maker Plus is a dual cassette multimedia player. The Infrared Music Maker Plus has all of the features of the 2395AV-02 with the added benefit of being able to transmit wireless audio from its two bubble-like transmitters on the top of the boombox to any number of wireless headphone-wearing students within a 20' line-of-sight range. All three are available individually or as part of a multi-student classroom learning center.
All models feature a 20-track programmable CD player, AM/FM radio, and cassette player/recorder with a built-in microphone to record student responses and presentations. Each Music Maker has a jack for connecting a headphone or jackbox for multiple listeners and two ¼” jacks to connect external speakers for a wider broadcast. Whenever a headphone or jackbox is connected, no audio plays out of the speakers. Each player is built from rugged ABS plastic (which won't shatter into potentially dangerous shards if it falls, unlike consumer electronics items) to withstand the rigors of daily school use. All three have recessed speakers protected by metal grilles to prevent accidental damage in busy classrooms.
The Music Maker and Music Maker Plus are available as 4-Person Learning Centers with four included stereo headphones and a ten-person stereo jackbox with individual volume controls. The Infrared Music Maker Plus comes as a Learning Center with six wireless headphones (no jackbox is necessary) and is expandable as additional students can be added with infrared headphones.

A: Although the 2395IR is a stereo media player, its transmitting signal with the HIR-HP1 is mono. When using the HIR-HP1 with the 2395IR, the stereo/mono switch on the HIR-HP1 should be set to mono.
A: The HIR-HP1 headphone is compatible with both Mac and PC computers. Simply acquire the Infrared Transmitter (HIR-TX1) to plug into your computer’s USB port, then set the stereo/mono switch on all your HIR-HP1 headphones to stereo to begin using them with the computer. Only one Infrared Transmitter is required per computer.
A: The recording function is featured in one of the two cassette decks in our media players, not both. Users can record onto just one cassette tape at a time.
A: The remote start/stop microphone input jack featured in 2385-03, 2395AV-02, and 2395IR enables users to remotely start and stop the cassette player/recorder only. The CD functions can be remotely controlled by the included remote control.
A: Califone Music Maker™ Series Media Players (2385-03, 2395AV-02, 2395IR) and Performer Plus™ (2455AV-03) all feature Balance Control function which will properly play a split track CD.
A: Once the external speakers are connected to the 2455AV-03, 2385-03, 2395AV-02, or 2395IR through the speaker jacks, the audio will be distributed through the external speakers only; the built-in speakers will automatically be deactivated. The playback wattage would be equal to the wattage of the external speakers.
A: Full Auto Stop means in playback, recording, and rewind/fast forward modes, the cassette player/recorder motor will stop operating once the cassette reaches its end. With Auto Stop, the cassette player/recorder motor will stop operating in the playback mode only when the cassette reaches its end; the motor will continue running in the recording and rewind/fast forward modes until the user manually press the Stop key. Full Auto Stop automatically stops the motor which helps extending the life of the belt, a critical component of the cassette player/recorder. Califone Media Players 1776, 2385-03, 2395AV-02, 2395IR, and CAS1500 feature Full Auto Stop.
A: The Full Auto Stop function means when the cassette tape runs to its end during playback, recording, and rewind/fast forward modes, the motor of the cassette player/recorder will automatically stop running and the cassette operation will stop. Califone Media Players 1776, 2385-03, 2395AV-02, 2395IR, and CAS1500 feature Full Auto Stop.
A: There is no preset limitation on the number of Infrared Stereo/Mono Headphones that can be used with the Infrared Music Maker Plus. The infrared signal transmission range from the dual IR diodes on the Infrared Music Maker Plus is 15’ line of sight; it will transmit clear audio to any number of Infrared Headphones that are within this range.
A: To keep the programmed radio stations in the media players, do not turn off the power at the end of the day; just leave the machine on the “stand by” position.
A: When installing batteries inside your boombox or cassette player, place them on top of the nylon ribbon found inside to help “pop” the old batteries out when they need to be replaced.
A: The Music Maker™ Plus multimedia player has a ‘random’ button that enables the player to select songs to play at random at any time music is played with one exception. If the CD has memory programmed, the ‘random’ feature cannot operate until the program is cleared. Learn about other controls the player has.
A: In order to repeat your programmed tracks using the Music Maker™ Plus multimedia player, push the ‘CD REPEAT’ button twice and the tracks will play in the programmed order. The display will show “REPEAT ALL”.
A: The tracks programmed using your Music Maker™ Plus multimedia player will only remain programmed and in order if the player is not turned off or unplugged. To ensure that your programmed selections are still available, leave the player on stand-by when not in use.
A: The Performer Plus™ and all of the media players in the Music Maker™ series can be connected to external speakers via two ¼” output jacks located on the back of each player. When external speakers are connected, audio will not play through the media player.
A: The term “wow and flutter” applies only to cassette player/recorders and to the cassette function of boomboxes. “Wow” refers to the changes in frequency caused by irregular tape motion during recording or playback. “Flutter” is the rapid variation of signal parameters, such as amplitude, phase, and frequency.
A: Yes. The Music Maker Series multimedia players (2385-03, 2395AV-02, 2395IR) and our Performer Plus™ all come with the cord wraps on the back of the units.
A: The CD window may be displaying “OPEN” for one of two reasons. First, the switch that registers the status of the door when it is closed or open could be faulty. Second, the CD mechanism may need to be replaced. Califone sells a replacement CD module for the MP3 Capable Music Maker™ and other boomboxes except the Spirit™. Please contact our Customer Service Dept to inquire more about this CD module.
A: A replacement CD module which consists of the entire CD player drive is available for the infrared Music Maker Plus™ media player and all boomboxes excluding the Spirit™. Please contact our Customer Service Dept to inquire more about this CD module.
A: When facing the front side of the Music Maker series media players (2385AV-03 and 2395AV-02), the built-in electret microphone is behind the left speaker grille, at about one o’clock position.
A: The 2385AV-03 Music Maker is capable of reading CDs with MP3 files. This is not to be confused with an MP3 player; the 2385AV-03 Music Maker cannot be used as an MP3 player to download MP3 files, but it can read a CD with MP3 files on it. Califone also offers MP3 Player 8101 and MP3 Learning Centers 8102 and 8104.
A: Yes, Califone sells a CD module for the 2395AV, as well as for all other boomboxes excluding the Spirit™, which consists of the entire CD player drive or component that includes the laser head. Please contact our Customer Service Dept. to inquire more about this CD module.
A: The 2455AV uses the RC-2400 remote control. The 2385AV, 2395AV and 2395IR boomboxes use the RC-2300 remote control. There is no remote control available for the Spirit 1776 boombox. The RC-2300 and RC-2400 may be purchased individually. Please contact our Customer Service Dept. for more information.
A: There is a speaker balance adjustment on the Performer Plus and most other Califone multimedia players. It should be normally set for the speaker balance to be in the center and not too far to the left or right.
A: On any dual-cassette media player, simultaneously press down on both 'RECORD' and 'PLAY' on the first cassette deck that you will record to and then press 'PLAY' on the second cassette deck which you will record from.
A: Califone recommends the 2455AV Performer Plus™ as an alternative to the 2395AV Music Maker™ as it is also a dual cassette/CD media player, has 14 watts RMS and 6 built-in headphone jacks. Depending on your use, the 2385-03 may be an upgrade since it plays MP3 files (on CDs).
A: Which jackbox depends on the type of activity that'll be used with the Music Maker. If it will be a language learning activity, a monaural jackbox is recommended. Califone offers an 8-position monaural jackbox. If it will be used for just listening enjoyment, then a Stereo jackbox would be best. Any Califone jackbox with a 1/4" and/or 3.5mm mini plug can be connected to the 2395AV boombox. Califone offers 4 and 10-position stereo jackboxes.
A: There is not a way to connect to the 2395AV media player; however you can instead connect to the 2455AV media player because it does have a line-in input to connect an RCA cable from the iMac.
A: No. Depending upon which Califone multimedia player you have, it can only be used to record onto a cassette tape, whether recording from the radio, another cassette, voice responses or a CD. The 2385-03 can play MP3 files and the new 8101 MP3 player/recorder however can record an MP3/wav file.
A: First check to make sure that a red light is not "on" the Music Maker™, indicating it is on standby mode. The light should be green which will enable you to use all the functions on your unit. Secondly, also make sure the tape heads are clean and that the cassette tape itself has not broken. Califone recommends using tapes no longer than 60 minutes in length because the longer tapes are thinner and are more prone to breakage.
A: The dimensions for the 2395AV are 18"L x 7"W x 9"H. All Califone product dimensions are found on their respective specification sheets. These can be found within each product's web page, or within the Product Specifications sheet area of the website.
