CardMaster Card Readers

Children's reading and writing skills develop in a wide variety of ways, and our card reader programs offer a special audiovisual training method that targets the needs of many. Designed for early childhood, K-12 bilingual reading, language learners, ESL and adult learners, special education, as well as intergenerational and workforce literacy groups, Action Fundamentals enables students to link visible letters with the sounds they hear played back through the Cardmaster device. This repeated, multi-modal, kinesthetic, visual and auditory reinforcement helps solidify mental connections between the written and spoken word and is a useful teaching tool for assessment and literacy training.

Ideal for classroom use as a group learning center, it can also be used individually in language labs and speech therapies. The Cardmaster and its simple to use language cards are a resource designed for patterning, call and response and repeated reading activities. The portable CardMaster is an effective "vocal mirror" for teacher and student, pathologist and client. Sliding the prerecorded card through the machine plays its contents through the 5 Watt speaker or allows for recording on blank cards. Students select a card, listen, record a response and compare the two recordings.

As children begin to learn their vocabulary and how to properly speak a language, any method of practicing words on a daily basis is essential to their success. In using a technique that initiates repetitive action to better pronounce words, kids can improve their speaking skills at their own pace. The card readers that Califone® offers are perfect resources for helping students reach their full potential when learning to speak clearly. Students who are lacking in their speech-language development, are learning a foreign language or are enrolled in an ELD/ESL classroom can benefit from any of the following card readers.

In this day and age, children are more competent with the latest technological advances and combining their tech-savvy skills with speech-language therapy is a winning solution. The AV Tutor™ digital card reader features a design and shape that today’s youth is familiar with. By engaging young learners with its sound clarity and vibrant, visual animation, this card reader ensures students remain focused on improving their language aptitude. Students can gain the confidence they need by working independently on fundamental reading instruction on phonemic awareness, vocabulary and comprehension activities.

Not only do the CardMaster™ Card Readers aid students with pronunciation of words, they teach them how to write them too. The various pre-recorded card programs that are available allow students to visually match the picture to the word on the card so they can recognize its description and how to spell it. Once the card is scanned through the card reader, they will also know how to correctly sound it out. The 2010AV and 2020AV card reader provides students who are not reading at the same level as their peers with the ability to practice correct pronunciation at a rate they are comfortable with. The built-in mic in both readers gives kids the ability to record their audio responses so they can listen to their own pronunciation of the words and compare it to what they hear with the pre-recorded cards so they can review their progress. The 2020AV card reader has a student/teacher track electronic memory feature that permanently records the teacher’s and/or student’s vocal response onto a card program card and repeats it until a new card is scanned.

When teachers want their younger students to focus on their listening skills, the Califone® READER card reader is the optimal choice so they can practice pronunciation on their own without supervision. This “play-only” card reader just does that – it only plays the cards being scanned and does not feature a built-in mic for recording audio responses. Smaller kids can use this player to continuously rehearse their pronunciation of words so they can begin to feel more confident in their reading ability.

A variety of card programs for all of the Califone® card readers are available in both full-color card and digital cartridge formats. To learn some of the most vital daily vocabulary words, children can practice with the two Basic Vocabulary and the two Everyday Word card programs. They can then segue into other programs that are more subject-specific such as Sight Words, Telling Time, Survival Signs, Money Words, Food Words and many more. There are seven digital cartridges for the AV Tutor™ consisting of Picture Words, Phonics, Readiness, Survival Signs, Basic Vocabulary, Everyday Words and also an animated, interactive program Play Ball. This program contains an interactive tutorial with a self-checking function that prevents students from continuing until they respond with the correct answer.
